No Age
The Triple Rock Social Club isn’t exactly a vegan grocery store or local library, but the unconventional art-punk duo No Age, who made a name for themselves playing at the oddest venues, should still be able to energize crowds in a more traditional rock setting tonight alongside friends Abe Vigoda. With the band's sophomore Sub Pop effort, Nouns, No Age has helped open earlobes to the scene emanating from The Smell, a volunteer-run Los Angeles concert space that also helped launch the careers of indie notables HEALTH and The Mae Shi. All the groups share a penchant for grand theatrics delivered in a DIY manner. And hearing No Age tracks like “Teen Creeps” and “Here Should Be My Home” live will undoubtedly thrill (one can only get so rowdy by listening to their distorted anthemic antics on a personal stereo system).

Openers Abe Vigoda stem from the same place and offer a similar smiling brand of noise-induced power pop, only with less focus placed on the guitar effects pedal (like No Age seem accustomed to) and more visceral punches to the gut. The four-piece also offers a distinctive muddy low-end and surf-tinged dissonance to the mix on their new disc Skeleton (songs such as “Lantern Heights” and “Endless Sleeper” resonate long after listening), which will surely make for a woozy additional impact to their upbeat ferocity in the live setting. And if there's any place to see two bands known for tearing it apart live finally come to Minneapolis to show us how it's done, it's the historic punk institute that is the Triple Rock.

But it doesn't end there. Stay later for the 10pm 21+ show that follows and you'll be treated to not one, not two, but three more bands that specialize in the playfully pummeling punk that No Age and Abe Vigoda hinted at earlier in the evening. Less interested in the strange and experimental and more concerned with staggeringly memorable melodies and instrumental intensity, Jay Reatard will certainly blow the roof off in support of his hot of the presses compilation Singles 06-07 on In the Red Records, plus the three singles he's put out as part of a series for Matador. Without the nasally annoyance of so many pop punk bands plaguing our planet or the brash insincerity of your average punk rockers, Reatard successfully keeps his tunes heavy (“Blood Visions” stays true to its name) and still the hooks sound optimistic, even if sometimes the lyrics aren't (his howling “she creeps me out / she crept me in again” on “See/Saw” will remain in your head for days).

Accompanying him will be labelmates and fellow Nashville residents Cheap Time, who brandish a retro snot swagger that, like Abe Vigoda playing before No Age, will certainly set an anticipatory tone for the final act of the long evening of awesomeness. From their recently issued self-titled debut, quick and dirty numbers like “People Talk” and “Back to School” will surely make for a strong set of no-nonsense party starters or help rejuvenate a crowd that's been bumming around the same bar since 5pm. The only local band between the two bills is Private Dancer, whose debut LP will be coming out on Learning Curve (home to The Blind Shake) in August and will be starting out this late smörgåsbord of punk rock. Capable of both doing the slow and noisy and the fast and furious, they look to be a prime offering of home-brewed musicality to fit in between the anxiously awaited performances from No Age and Jay Reatard.
