Smile Brigade
Given the overrepresentation of bands from the Pacific Northwest on the national indie music radar it's easy to fall into the false assumption that every decent band who calls Seattle home is signed to a nationally distributed indie and slobbered over on Pitchfork on a weekly basis. Then along comes a band like Smile Brigade, releasing records on a regional label nobody's heard of (Tilton House) and with little to no national buzz at present - and, suprise, surprise - their pretty darn good (congrats again you spoiled Seattleites).

The tunes proffered on their debut full-length, Take The Precious Edge Off This Treacherous Ledge, include old-school collegiate rock of the ringing Rickenbacker early-R.E.M. variety ("Rafts On Fire"), the occassional detour into gutterbum alt. country balladry ("Kalifornia"), and, rather inexplicably, waste-oid garage rock ("Doombox"). A vaguely stoned late '60s air hangs over the whole affair so perhaps the crew can get a love-in started at the Uptown tonight, where they're part of a solid otherwise local bill of talent.
