The Deaths
The Deaths serve up a vaguely Kinks-ish yet thoroughly modern and engaging slice of pop on their about to be released sophomore album, Centralia. Balancing darkness and light with graceful aplomb, tracks like “Turn for the Worst” shift effortlessly from minor key verses to gooey reach for the stratosphere choruses with vocalist/guitarist Karl Qualey’s voice proving particularly compelling working in its upper register. The Deaths have always seemed an act on the verge of breaking out of the Twin Cities bubble and on to larger scale national recognition (Chuck Klosterman’s sung their praises in Spin, Jim DeRogatis in the Chicago-Sun Times). The acclaim should only increase when Centralia’s hazy beauty envelopes the Twin Cities live on stage this weekend at the Deaths album release show.
