Now, i hate the cries of "sellout" as much as anyone, especially in this day and age when many of my favorite smaller bands have licensed out songs for commercials, but these 2 acts by Chris over the last week are hard to defend even as a longtime fan of Soundgarden.
The first item is that Chris cancelled two of his concerts over the weekend in Denver and Salt Lake City. No reason given, just this statement on his website that was posted a day before the Utah gig was scheduled to happen: Salt Lake and Denver Shows Postponed We regret to inform you that the shows scheduled for July 13th (Salt Lake City, Utah) and July 14th (Denver, Colorado) have been postponed until the next leg of the tour. Turns out, the reason Chris cancelled the 2 shows was to play a private gig in Santa Monica, CA for the 5th anniversary of the designer jeans company 'Rock & Republic '. Instead of playing to his true fans who paid their hard earned money to see him, he skips the shows to play for a company that makes $200+ jeans. Some of Chris' fans were quick to defend him and couldn't believe that it happened, but these Wire Image photos prove that it is in fact true.
Postponement on the Fillmore marquee As if that wasn't lame enough, just the day before Chris cancelled 2 shows to play a private gig, he and his band played an in-studio for Wal-Mart's "Soundcheck" series. Now this isn't a stereotypical jab about the people who shop at Wal-Mart or anything like that. It just seems rather hypocritical of Chris who just played Live Earth 2 weeks ago and now he's playing a concert for one of the largest and richest companies in the world. Walmart's rap sheet includes poor labor conditions not only among the people in 3rd world countries who make much of the clothing and goods they sell, but also how poorly they treat their own employees. Did he really not think anyone would notice or say something? Sure we can possibly chalk this double booking up to poor scheduling or a miscommunication by his management and/or booking agent, but the fact is, Chris chose to cancel 2 of his own shows instead of the corporate gig. He could have easily just blown off the 'Rock & Republic' gig and pissed off a few suits and employees and not his own longtime fans.
It's not the fact that he played the corporate gig that bothers me (and likely most of his fans) or even if he in fact wears $200+ designer jeans, i really don't give a shit about that. But the fact that he cancelled 2 of his own actual shows with one days notice just shows a huge amount of disrespect for his fans. Add that to the Wal-Mart session and it's impossible to not leave a bad taste in your mouth. |
