Although the current Twin Cities music scene certainly doesn't suffer from a dearth of talent it's always exciting when a new band comes along brandishing a style that has yet to fully flourish locally. Hence my excitement over the dulcet anglophile pop of North, a quartet featuring music scene vets who've spent time honing their chops in established groups like Cloud Cult and The Nina, The Pinta, The Santa Maria who have now banded together to form a sound far different from either of those groups or anything else in the Land of 10,000 Lakes. Led by vocalist/guitarist Jon Reine's showstopping tenor the band already has a few high profile gigs under its belt (I first caught them wowing a relatively packed 7th St. Entry this fall while opening for Sea Wolf) and has even bigger plans for the future (a national press campaign and tour are planned once their debut album drops, tentatively slated for late spring). You can listen to a rough mix of "Goodbye Sweet Youth" from their pending debut to hear what all the fuss is about, or better yet head on out to the Varsity Theater tonight and catch them in person.
