![]() The Parlour Suite Funny how the music made by this trio is bound to be labeled traditional when it's in fact far more unique and uncommon than the tired bar rock being turned out in dives across America. Joel Roberts, Inga Roberts, and Leah Nelson layer their appealing vocals, often in harmony, on top of a solid foundation of blues and ragtime. It's all done with a minimum of fuss and a maximum of warmth, making for great cloudy afternoon listening. They should fit in quite well with the robust roots scene here in the Twin Cities with the release of their debut CD, Rainmaker, which was recorded at Ed Ackerson's Flower Studios and produced by drummer extraordinaire Peter Anderson, who also lent his talents behind the kit to the disc. The songs available for previewing on their MySpace page run the gamut from Jolie Holland-esque folk to Johnny Cash and June Carter's duets and all the way back to the gospel recordings of Blind Willie Johnson and his wife, Angeline. It'll be interesting to see what Anderson's playing and ear lend to their recordings on their first full-length. Listen to "Gambling Man's Disgrace" from Rainmaker The Parlour Suite's MySpace COMING UP: The Parlour Suite play the CD Release Show for Rainmaker with JoAnna James and Charlie Parr on Thursday, January 17, at the Bryant-Lake Bowl . 9:30 pm. $8/$10.
