 X Ray Hip aren't likely to crack the radar of the blogosphere. For one thing, they're just too old for Pitchfork to care, but they also play resolutely stripped-down garage rock whose point is clearly kicking out the jams, not impressing the hipsters. Their new disc, New American Lady on Rich Mattson's SMA Records, was produced by John Munson of Semisonic and The Flops fame, and it represents singer Aaron Seymour's return to the rock fold after a decade-plus long absence following the dissolution of the Delilahs back in 1997. On songs like "Skyscraper," the music bears some of the grind and punk ethic of Social Distortion, but mixed with bittersweet and yearning melodies that recall '60s pop and garage acts. For fans of the Delilahs, it will be an instantly familiar sound, and the time off hasn't diminished Seymour's vocal chops one bit. Fans of real heartland rock would be advised to check out the CD release show for New American Lady at the 400 Bar this Saturday, March 22.
