Halloween, Alaska (L), Blake, and Haley Bonar (R)
Tchad Blake has a resume as long as your arm, but only if you have particularly long arms. He's worked with everyone from Peter Gabriel to Pearl Jam to Tom Waits to Phish to Bonnie Raitt to Al Green to Tracy Chapman to American Music Club and many points in between. I'm guessing it's his work with The Bad Plus, though, that has brought him into contact with a couple of Minnesota artists.

Halloween, Alaska frontman James Diers told me the other day that they're getting ready to go into the studio with Blake to work on mixing the new Halloween, Alaska record, which has been a long time coming. The Bad Plus' David King also plays drums for Halloween, Alaska, and the members have been navigating life changes (kids, etc.) since the release of 2005's Too Tall to Hide and keeping a low profile.

Diers also reports that Blake has finished work on Haley Bonar's next record. He's only heard a bit of it, but Diers reports that it's got a very different sound than Lure the Fox, with Bonar's vocals more immersed in the production and a greater emphasis on the texture provided by guitarist Mike "Bill Mike" Michel. Can't wait to hear this one; Lure the Fox was one of my absolute favorite records of '06.

Diers and bassist Matt Friesen will be heading to Blake's studio at the end of April to get a "front-row seat," according to Diers, on Blake's mixing process for the new Halloween, Alaska joint.
