John Davis, drummer for the now defunct DC dance-punkers Q and Not U teamed up with singer/songwriter Laura Burhenn to create one of the years best indie pop records. The album had been done for quite some time but just finally came out officially in September on Omaha's Saddle Creek Records .

In a year with some fairly average indie pop releases (The Shins, New Pornographers, Rogue Wave, etc.), Places is a standout by far. Georgie James' influences can be traced to the bubble-gum pop of the '50s and '60s, but the overall sound and vibe of the record is so fresh and just plain fun that it keeps it from sounding cheesy or too sugary.

"Look Me Up" kicks off the album with great energy and one of the records numerous infectious pop hooks. "Cake Parade," featuring Laura on lead vocals, displays the albums diversity by having rotating male and female lead vocal duties. Much like "Cake Parade," "Long Week" wouldn't sound too out of place on Regina Spektor's last album and in a perfect world both would be top 40 hits.

Image"Need Your Needs", the first single off of Places and one of it's strongest tracks, should sound pretty familiar to anyone that heard the last two Q and Not U records. "More Lights" also mixes some of the post-punk vibe leftover from Q and Not U with an incredible dual vocal melody chorus.

John and Laura share lead vocals on the jangly folk pop of "Henry and Hanzy," but the albums is at its most folky on the acoustic driven "Hard Feelings" and "You Can Have It." Ending the album with a bang, "Only 'Cause You're Young," closes the tight and efficient album (just shy of 40 minutes) making you crave more, as most great pop records should.
